The Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival or the GBR Marathon is the ultimate adventure marathon, based in the beautiful Port Douglas taking place in October/November each year. The marathon leads participants through spectacular rainforests, across the stunning four mile beach, and through challenging terrain.
The GBR Marathon offers several different races to accommodate different preferences and skill levels. The Hallmark event is the 74 kilometre JCU ultra marathon beginning at 5am and requiring participants to be able to complete 62 kilometres in 9 hours. Next is the 42.2 kilometre Steve Moneghetti Marathon; the 21.1 kilometre half marathon; then there are shorter distance races: 10 kilometre Newsport Daily, 5 kilometres Bendigo Bank, and finally the Coles Junior 2.5 kilometre challenge which is free.
Endorsed and participated in my marathon legend, Steve Moneghetti, the Great Barrier Reef Marathon is one to mark in the racing calendar. Team up, or compete alone to raise funds for your chosen charity through Everyday Hero or take the challenge for personal goals, the choice is yours. Either way you will finish your race and be recovering in a tropical paradise.
